Girls in elementary school have unique needs. At a time in their lives when they are beginning to discover who they are and what being female means to them, it's important for girls to have experiences where success is not related to appearance, weight, or attractiveness to boys.
An important part of the program at Camp O' Fair Winds is to get girls to set goals, and to rely on themselves for success in reaching these goals. Girls have a voice here! 7-8 year olds plan daily schedules, while 9-11 year olds plan routes for bike trips or work together to produce a play or an art exhibit. With guidance from adults, girls can take charge and come up with solutions to challenges they face.
Counselors come from all over the world, and are specially trained to work with elementary school-age girls. Counselors make a special effort to get to know each girl and to make sure everyone is involved. They introduce girls to camping through a variety of outdoor activities including swimming, canoeing, archery, ropes and teams courses, outdoor cooking, arts & crafts, horseback riding, and sports. Girls get a chance to discover new things and to make new friends in a supportive environment. | |
