Camp Wa-Klo is a traditional 4-8 week residential summer camp for girls located in New Hampshire’s beautiful southern region. With an professional, trained staff, splendid facilities, strong programming and quality instruction, we provide girls with a positive summer experience in a safe place where they feel comfortable and cared about. It is a community where girls feel secure to be their amazing selves and where they can meet new challenges with the strong support of others and a sense of accomplishment.
Camp Wa-Klo for Girls has moved beyond the traditional scheduling format of a bunk group moving together from one activity to another throughout the day. We believe in the philosophy that giving girls opportunities for choice encourages individual interests to flourish and allows for learning to occur naturally.
Girls at Wa-Klo who have completed grades 4-9 are encouraged to be independent about their programs with they support of Wa-Klo’s outstanding staff. Each week they discuss their schedules with their counselors and select activities that they really love and want to participate in. A girl can spend an entire day on the waterfront swimming, waterskiing, canoeing, windsurfing and participating in crew. Or she can elect tennis, lacrosse and crafts. The schedule is her own and her skills will improve as she works with specialists to develop talents and nurture interests.
For our youngest campers finishing grades, 1 and 2, we offer a more structured 2 week ‘Junior Program’ and, for girls grades 10 and up, leadership opportunities. With awesome special events, trips, and evening activities for everyone, the excitement never stops and the memories forever last.
We believe in the benefits of a single gender camping experience and provide a summer camp where girls can simply be girls. Research has found that in single gender environments, girls and boys are more likely to challenge themselves, take supported risks, feel more comfortable being themselves and tend to worry less about outward appearances and opinions.
At Wa-Klo, we want our campers to feel safe to explore new interests and to be themselves without worrying about acting or looking a certain way. Without boys present, we eliminate one of the added social pressures than can sometimes prohibit girls from being themselves. Girls can relax and know they are accepted and loved for who they are and, as a result, girls at Wa-Klo learn to respect one another for their individuality and learn to support one another while they explore new possibilities and develop healthy, interpersonal relationships.
That being said, we do understand the importance of developing positive relationships with boys and offer age appropriate, supervised activities and socials with nearby boys camps.
