Learn to have more fun with horses!

Classes are limited to 6 participants.
Children ages 8 and up will enjoy a fun filled week of horses at Whole Horse Journeys summer day camp. Camp includes learning to ride and care for horses, fun, educational projects and games on horseback.
Week 1 session
July 5-8 - Ages 8 to 12 July 26-29 - Ages 13 and up
For beginning riders or riders who may need to re-acquaint themselves with basic skills

Course of study includes:
• Grooming and tacking
• Basic Handling (Halter, Lead & Tie the Horse)
• Mounting/Dismounting
• Basic aids for – walking, trotting, halting, turning
• Position Design
• Exercises in the saddle
• Drill positions
• Trotting circles and turns
• Safety practices
• Horses’ Behavior
• Non-interfering seat
• Balance and Weight Distribution
• Relaxation
• Mounted games
• Apply all of the above learned skills to make their riding experience safer, more exciting and more fun
Week 2 session
July 12-15 - Ages 8 to 12 Aug. 2-5 - Ages 13 and up
For riders who have completed week one session of the curriculum or can demonstrate equivalent ability.

• Security in the Saddle
• Ground poles and low jumping
• How horses see
• How horses move
• First aid basics
• Stall cleaning
• Rhythm & Spring
• Obstacle course work
• Communication
• Breeds & Colors
• Riding outside the ring
• The Four Key Elements of a Functional Position
• The Seven Components of a Functional Position
• Mounted games
• Apply all of the above learned skills to make their riding experience safer, more exciting and more fun
Special week two event: Riders will demonstrate their skills for parents on Thursday and enjoy a pizza party at the end of session.

Campers completing two weeks of camp will be able to:
• Groom and tack their horse
• Ride at a walk and trot both inside and outside the ring
• Ride over low jumps at the trot
• Have a secure position in the saddle for the above riding
• Understand communication basics
• Understand how horses move
• Understand how horses see
• Confidently negotiate simple obstacle courses while mounted
• Apply all of the above learned skills to make their riding experience safer, more exciting and more fun
