Who should attend? High school students thinking of a career in geology, geological engineering or paleontology, as well as students interested in earth systems science!
Camps are available for grades 6-8 and 9-12.
Through daily field trips, participants will learn about:
Minerals, rocks and fossils
Basic geology
Oil and gas exploration and production
Using topographic maps
Understand geologic maps
Water, landslides, and earthquakes
Volcanoes and magmas
Geology of the Black Hills
The creation of mountains and landforms
Live the life of a field geologist for five days!
Geology Field Camp gives students a chance to experience college life in an outdoor setting. Campers will have roommates in tents, eat outdoor cooking, visit the Museum of Geology, library and research labs, and go on field trips to see geologists in action! This is truly a field camp experience!
Campers will arrive Sunday night. This is an overnight camping activity and tents will be set up for the entire camp.
This camp is a taste of what a geology-focused career will be like!

Explore the fascinating world of Chemical and Biological Engineering in this hands-on camp! Learn what it's like to be a chemical engineer and the types of work they do!
Students will learn what Chemical and Biological Engineering is, as well as the following:
• Chemical process design
• How to convert biomass into products
• Biofuels
• Biopharmaceuticals
• Other Bio-based products
• Chocolate processing for consumption
• Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials
This hands-on program will give students experiences to help them make decisions about pursuing Chemical and Biological Engineering in college. This is a great pre-college experience!

Camps are available for both boys and girls, grades 6-8 and 9-12.
STEPS Camp for grades 6-8 is a one-week introduction to the world of technology and engineering.Campers participate in hands-on activities that give them an understanding of what engineers do.
Students will explore science and engineering topics such as:
Materials/metallurgy
CAD/CAM
Clean manufacturing
Computer integrated manufacturing
Chemical engineering
Team building
STEPS Camp for grades 9-12, is a one-week introduction to the world of technology and engineering. Campers participate in hands-on activities that give them an understanding of what engineers do.
Students will explore science and engineering topics such as:
Robotics
Mechanical design
Programming languages
Bridge building
Making biofuels
Multi-disciplinary projects
And more!
Of course there is time for fun! The camp also includes a number of activities that may include swimming, pizza parties, a field trip, etc. Participants will experience dorm life, cafeteria food and learn what it is like to be on a college campus.
This is an overnight residential camp. A room will be provided in a residence hall on the School of Mines campus for the entire week. There will be 2-4 campers per room. The camp will provide all meals.
Scholarships may be available for academic performance or financial need!

Magnetropolis – Design a magnet-powered city and build a maglev train.
Inventeureka - Join Team Inventeureka and mash up ideas to build wacky and humorous
widget inventions that morph into amazing, new prototypes!
I Can Invent: Balloon Burst - Work with real tools to take apart a small mechanical device, use the parts and other materials to build a Rube Goldberg machine!
Action and Adventure Games – Use upcycled materials and teamwork to create your own exciting new games!
Directed and taught by qualified local educators, Camp Invention is a national STEM enrichment program from the nonprofit Invent Now. Activities also focus on developing 21st Century learning skills such as teamwork, critical thinking skills, decision-making, creative problem-solving, and working through failure.

Mining and Explosives Engineering Camp

Mining and Explosives Engineering Camp

Camp available to students in grades 10-12.
Students participating in this camp will learn about the science behind explosives and how engineers apply explosive forces to break rock to unearth precious minerals from the ground.
Students will explore the world of math, physics, and chemistry through explosives and will be given a truly unique experience - an up close and personal view of mining and explosives engineering by trained explosives experts.
Field trips to watch blasts will be included in this exciting camp experience!
There will be an outdoors classroom component to this camp, so students must be able to stand for up to four hours at a time. Students must also provide sun protection (sunglasses, sun screen, a hat, and appropriate clothing).
Students must be able to follow written and verbal directions
and instructions in order to participate in this camp.
