Space is still available in all our fun, affordable summer camp weeks!

Our summer day camps offer small groups, a 6-1 adult-to-camper ratio, and an easy-going pace to make learning fun and exciting.

Each week will be different, including the Improv camp weeks - sign up for one week or several, depending on your schedule. All camp sessions will also include workshops on theatre crafts and make-up techniques, as well as an introduction to theatre appreciation. Improvisation will happen every day! Plus, now that we are located at a costume shop, we are able to integrate costumes into many of the activities.

All camps are held at The American Backstage Company, 5380 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia, 22304. The premises just inside the Beltway, and a very short walk from the Van Dorn Metro station on the Blue Line. Free parking is available.

Camp Hours:

9 AM. – 4 PM (before and after care will be available this year upon request, for an additional fee)

Ages:
Teens, ages 13-18
Pre-teens, ages 8-12

Fees:

All week-long camps are $300. Additional fee for before and after care. Discounts available for siblings and multiple weeks: 10% discount for each additional week or each additional camper from the same family (First week or first camper will be $300; second week or second camper will be $270.) SPECIAL DISCOUNT FOR EARLY REGISTRATION: $20 discount for all paid registrations received before June 1st, 2013.


Schedule:

Week 1 – July 8-12, 2013

Teens and Pre-teens (separate classes): Improv week! Students will learn about short form improv and theater sports of all types. Improvisational theatre games teach the fundamentals of theatre and stagecraft. Emphasis is on developing theatrical and comedic skills. Each improv camp week will be different -- that's the nature of this interactive art form! Activities include popular favorites as well as new challenges: Party Quirks, Death in a Minute, Space Jump, Props, 90 Second Alphabet, Criminal Minds, Typist Narrator, Emotional Zone, The Harold, La Ronde, and more.



Week 2 – July 15-19, 2013

Teens only

Classic Comedy week! What makes the comedy of Carol Burnett, Burns & Allen, and Abbott & Costello so timeless? Students will discover classic comedy sketches from the days of Vaudeville through the golden age of TV variety shows.



Week 3 – July 22-26, 2013

Teens: Create-A-Play. Othewise known as Long-form improv. Don't let this term scare you! Students will write and perform a play through "Second City" style improv methods.

Pre-teens: Fringe Fables: Fairy tale and folk tale week! This fun-filled week of improvisational theatre games will focus on classic folk tales and fairy tales as students learn the fundamentals of theatre and stagecraft. Students will stretch their imaginations and minds as they explore story structure.



Week 4 – July 29-August 2, 2013

Teens only: Master Acting Class. The Master Class is designed for the serious acting students looking to further their exploration into advanced acting techniques. We explore the teachings of Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, and other great acting teachers. Class includes proper audition training, monologues, scene work, and improv. Ideal for students preparing for college auditions.



Week 5 - August 5-9

2. 2012 Sports International Passing & Receiving Academy - Position specific comprehensive training for quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends taught for campers ages 7-18. Each player will receive in-depth, comprehensive instruction throughout the academy! Our coaching staff has an extraordinary ability to convey their knowledge of the fundamentals, discipline and mental skills needed for campers to be successful at these positions.

Position specific comprehensive training for quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends taught by expert coaches, for campers ages 7-18. Each player will receive in-depth, comprehensive instruction throughout the academy! Our coaching staff has an extraordinary ability to convey their knowledge of the fundamentals, discipline and mental skills needed for quarterbacks, receivers, and tight ends to be successful at these positions. Our training techniques guide participants through a skill-learning process, where every teaching experience has a purpose. This allows our staff to identify each player’s personal needs and develop their skills. When they continue to practice at home, they will be able to continue to develop the skills they learned in an order that simulates a game situation. Our goal is to encourage each athlete to continue to “raise the bar” throughout the entire academy. Outstanding 10:1 coach-to-athlete ratio with individualized and small group instruction! All students are separated throughout the entire camp by age, experience, and ability! Three camps in one! Junior, Senior, and Advanced Levels! Each quarterback and receiver will receive a FREE camp shirt, a quarterback or receiver manual and a quarterback booklet on coverage’s. Each quarterback will properly throw hundreds of footballs! This camp is one of the best supervised camps in the nation and father counselors are welcome to join us at camp. Over 91,000 Sports International athletes have gone through our football programs over the past 28 years. Shakespeare's Time Traveling Players Boot Camp!
June 27th - July 1st, 9am-3pm

(Grades 6-9) One week crash course in the world of William Shakespeare! Students will experience History as we walk back to the 16th century with a troupe of Shakespearian Actors who will be visiting Del Ray in their Time traveling Wagon! This troupe of actors make their living traveling through time teaching and performing the great Bard of Avons words and works! They will park their wagon and turn it into a stage for a week this summer to teach a lucky group of students all there is to know about Elizabethan England, The World of Shakespeare, How to Act Shakespeare, Swordplay and Fisticuffs, Poetry and more! Students will learn to write a Sonnet and perform some of the Shakespeare's greatest scenes, monologues and poems. Fun Costumes and makeup culminate in an public performance by students on the Time Wagons Stage! Tuition: $500

Shakespeare Players Camp!
July 11th- July 15th, 9am-3pm

(Grades 2 - 5) A week of Elizabethan fun! In this class we will engage in creative dramatic play based on Shakespeare’s words, setting, and characters. Through movement, story-telling, and music we will be fairies in the forest, witches brewing their cauldrons, princes and princesses in far away castles, and much more. Let your imagination soar as we step into the world of Shakespeare! The camp will end in a performance for friends and family. Tuition: $500

Improv Adventures Camp!
July 18th- July 22nd, 9am-3pm

(Grades 2 - 5) At Improv Adventures Camp kids will learn and play improvisational games and exercises that the basis of Improv Theatre. By experiencing the fun and excitement of improv comedy kids and will build confidence, learn to think on their feet, develop team work and listening skills as well as performance and comedic abilities. The camp will end in a performance for family and friends. Tuition: $500.

Jedi Warriors Training Academy Padawan Camp!
July 25th– July 29th, 9am-3pm

(Grades 4-7) Students have fun and learn the ways of the “Force” in this one-week intro to acting/ beginning stage combat camp. In this camp young Jedi will hone their story telling skills by learning basic acting skills, character creation and the basics of choreographed stage combat (hair and ear pulls, punches, slaps, kicks, and falls) incorporating “Star Wars” themes. All techniques taught during this week of fun are approved by the Society of American Fight Directors and emphasize safety and cooperation. During the week, students will develop choreographed “Star Wars” themed performance scenes utilizing the techniques learned during the camp. The final day of camp will culminate with performances of the scenes created during the week. Tuition: $500

Jedi Warriors Training Academy Knights Camp!
August 1st – August 5th, 9am-3pm

(Grades 6-9) Students have fun and learn the ways of becoming a Jedi master in this one-week intro to acting/ beginning stage combat camp. In this camp Jedi will hone their story telling skills by learning basic acting skills, character creation and the basics of choreographed stage combat (hair and ear pulls, punches, slaps, kicks, and falls) incorporating “Star Wars” themes. This camp will also introduce students to the basics of unarmed combat, stick and found weapons.
All techniques taught during this week of fun are approved by the Society of American Fight Directors and emphasize safety and cooperation. During the week, students will develop choreographed “Star Wars” themed performance scenes utilizing the techniques learned during the camp. The final day of camp will culminate with performances of the scenes created during the week. Tuition: $500.00

The School of Rock Camp is an opportunity for those 8-15 to experience the many challenges of organizing a rock band. Students choose their own material and band name, design their own flyers, record and perform. Tuition: $500

School of Jazz Camp
June 13th - June 17th, and August 8th-12th , 9am-3pm

The School of Jazz Camp with teach young musicians some of the basic fundamentals of Jazz music, from learning about the history of Jazz music to the art of improvisation. Students will play together as a group and apply principals learned during the weeks activities. The class culminates in a performance for friends and family. Tuition: $500

School of Rock “Song Writers” Camp
July 25th - July 29th, 9am-3pm
August 7th - August 13th, 9am-3pm

The School of Rock ”Song Writers” Camp is an opportunity for those 8-15 to experience the many challenges of writing, arranging, and performing their own music. Students will study song structure and creative writing fundamentals, write and perform their own material in optional solo or group performances at the end of the camp. Tuition: $500
