Learn how to fly airplanes, gliders, and ultra-lights at aviation summer camps. Some aviation camps offer hands on aircraft experience, while others provide instruction via flight simulators and models. A flight school environment provides valuable insight into the science and mechanics which facilitate flight: learn about instrumentation, navigation, aeronautics, weather, and pilot safety.

1. Randolph-Macon Summer Programs - Academic camp (grades 6-8) includes morning classes, trips to museums, swimming, etc. Grades 9-12 may participate in new or repeat courses for high school credit, English as a Second Language, or flight program.
Resident Camp - Day Camp - Coed - Front Royal, Virginia

At Randolph-Macon Academy's Academic Camp, students entering grades 6-8 this fall focus on academics in the morning and fun in the afternoon. Students choose three morning classes, focusing on Art, Reading Comprehension, History in Action, World Events, Concrete Mathematics, Abstract Mathematics, Technology, or Study Skills.

Students learn community life skills, team building, and community service, while also participating in swimming, basketball, rollerblading, miniature golf, cookouts, movies, bowling, and hiking. Each Wednesday, students participate in academic field trips to area museums and attractions, such as the Marine Corps Museum, Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum, and the Kennedy Center.

On Saturdays, all students go to an amusement park. On Sundays, they have activities such as whitewater rafting, paintball, and laser tag.

Students entering grades 9-12 in the fall, or who need to make up a class to graduate at the end of summer, may attend Randolph-Macon Academy's Upper School Summer Program. Twenty courses are offered for new and/or repeat credit, including most courses required for graduation, SAT Prep, Art, and Photography. Classes are held Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and from 8:00 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. on Saturdays. Summer School course hours meet or exceed Virginia State guidelines.

During the weekday evenings and/or on Saturday afternoons, all students participate in trips to major theme parks. On Sundays, students may walk into the town of Front Royal to go shopping or to the movies. Other activities include swimming and athletic activities.

An English as a Second Language (ESL) program is available to international students entering grades 6-12 in the fall. The program provides the non-English speaking student with practical instruction in ESL. The course combines classroom group sessions, individualized self-paced computer programs, cultural experiences, and other activities to provide a total-immersion program of the English language. The program includes Beginner ESL, Intermediate ESL, Advanced ESL, and TOEFL Prep.

Randolph-Macon also offers a flight program including aviation ground school (tailored to soloing in a Cessna 152 or 172), approximately 15 hours of dual flight instruction, and an FAA medical examination (if necessary). Federal Aviation Regulations state that a student must be at least 16 years of age or older to earn solo wings. For safety reasons and because students' abilities vary, Randolph-Macon does not guarantee either solo status or certification regardless of the flight time or costs incurred.
