Where are we? Camp is located in Kerrville, on 504 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country, only about an hour northwest of San Antonio. We're close enough to Kerrville to enjoy the restaurants and entertainment, and far enough away to enjoy the night sky. The Hill Country has great places for camping, climbing, kayaking, biking, tubing, and San Antonio is perfect for taking in all the historic sites and shopping!
What do we do? Texas Lions Camp is a camp for children with physical disabilities, children with cancer, and children with type 1 diabetes. We provide similar activities to mainstream camps, but we adapt everything so that all of our campers can participate. Activities include waterfront (pool and sports lake), music therapy, recreation and athletics, nature studies, barnyard and greenthumb, arts and crafts, ceramics, photography, radio station, horsemanship, archery, and center stage. We are looking for activity staff for those areas as well as bunkhouse staff to travel with campers from activity to activity each day.
Does it pay? YES, in so many ways! You'll get a weekly salary, we'll do your laundry, and DID I MENTION $50,000 in scholarships??? No special needs experience is required and extensive paid training is provided. Salary starts at $150/week (depending on position/experience) and includes room/board and laundry services. Back to that scholarship thing...not only can you get experience for college, we might even help you pay for it. TLC offers a scholarship program that our staff can apply for. Scholarships awarded in 2007 totaled over $50,000. $50,000, you say??? Internships are also available. Call for more information on those.
Adventure Programming:
Adventure Programming is designed to help campers develop problem solving skills and personal initiative. Through a variety of group-oriented activities, this program illustrates the importance of teamwork and the value which each individual holds within a group. To accommodate its activities, the program offers a spacious sports complex, shaded outdoor areas, and a ropes course with low and high elements (the high elements course is approximately 25' high).
Archery:
The Archery program instructs various target procedures and safety precautions that are used in archery. The program provides a shaded shooting range where campers can learn target skills using recurve bows.
Arts & Crafts/Ceramics:
The Arts & Crafts program offers campers a chance to explore their creativity while working with fabric, leather, wood, basketry, clay and ceramics. Campers are free to keep their projects and to take them home at the conclusion of their camping session.
Barnyard & Greenthumb:
The Barnyard/Greenthumb program encourages an appreciation for the many ways in which farm animals affect our daily lives and a chance to experience a working garden and greenhouse. At the barnyard, campers have the opportunity to see, touch, and feed a variety of farm animals. In the garden and greenhouse, campers get to investigate the many uses of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Center Stage:
The Center Stage program encourages an appreciation of fine arts by introducing campers to the stage techniques that are used in the performance of music, dance, and drama. Center Stage activities are presented in a theater setting, complete with a real stage, curtains, and imaginative costuming. Campers have a chance to enjoy performing with their peers in a variety of stage productions, including skits, plays, and fashion shows.
Horsemanship:
The Horsemanship program allows campers the opportunity to learn about horses. In addition to an orientation about horse care and horse behavior, most campers are given the opportunity to ride horseback in a covered arena or on a natural trail.
Music:
The Music program introduces musical activities that teach team building skills and self-esteem. Campers have the chance to participate with others in a group music setting and to enjoy musical instruments ranging from guitars to Latin-American rhythm instruments.
Nature Studies:
The Nature Studies program helps campers investigate their relationship with the natural environment. The program considers concepts such as weather, conservation, natural resources, and natural habitats. There are many aspects to the Nature Studies program including a Nature Lab, Log Cabin Classroom and Nature Trail. Opportunities are available for campers to develop skills in camping and animal care, and many will learn about regional Native American and Pioneer history in an authentic Tepee Village.
Photography:
The Photography program gives campers a chance to learn how a camera works and the process for developing black and white photos. Campers get the opportunity to take pictures of their favorite activities to take home and share with their family and friends.
Recreation & Athletics:
The Recreation and Athletics program provides opportunities for campers to learn a variety of sports and games that are designed for both individual and group play. The Camp’s large recreation fields accommodate games such as football, softball, kickball, and soccer. The program also gives campers opportunities to use tennis courts, a miniature golf course, and a Sports Complex with indoor courts and a weight room.
Radio:
The Radio program introduces campers to a working radio station while participating in TLC’s newest activity! KTLC 1680AM, The Roar of the Lion, features music, staff and camper interviews, talk shows, bedtime stories and much more. Campers will learn the steps in producing a radio show; from interviews and music to commercials and closing comments.
Waterfront:
The Waterfront program utilizes games as a teaching tool to help campers learn how to safely have fun in the water. Water can be very therapeutic for children with disabilities, allowing them the opportunity to exercise in a weightless environment using full body movements. Many campers will also have the opportunity to participate in canoeing and/or paddle boating at our sports lake.
