More About Camp
Place of Camp: Sports of all Sorts and Kaleidoscope of Art Studio (6002 Sunnyside Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46236)
Date and Time: July 23-27 from 9am to 3pm daily.
Friday Family Events and Art Exhibit: Children will kick off the afternoon by showcasing their art work created and performing any team cheers or songs. An exhibit will be planned and produced by the children of each separate sports team. Through games and exhibitions, the children will showcase not only what they artistically created, but what they learned in the different sports in which they participated.
Why: Nelson Mandela, Nobel Laureate and former President of South Africa, said, “Art and sport have the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can. Art and sport speak to people in a language they understand. Art and sport can create hope where there was once only despair. They are instruments of peace, even more powerful than governments.” Sports of All Sorts and Art With a Heart feel that the children on the east side of Indianapolis need a summer camp that combines the critical elements of sports and art. Art improves the children’s creativity, increases their ability to stay focused, and helps them learn to follow sequential steps, while sports provide physical activity helping to reduce obesity. Both will help develop teamwork and teach children how to be supportive team members. Overall, this program is needed to:
• Nurture children’s creativity
• Promote and encourage enjoyment in physical education
• Fight obesity
• Involve more boys in art and more girls in sports
• Foster cross-cultural teamwork and cooperation
• Develop teamwork skills
Indiana ranks as the eighth heaviest state in the country, according to a report by Trust for America’s Health. Children living in areas of lower income are more likely to be obese than other children. Statistics for Marion County indicate that 43–48% of Black and Hispanic students in the 9–15 age group are either at-risk of being overweight or are overweight. The major factors contributing to this problem are too much screen time (television, video games and computers) and not enough physical activity. Enjoyable and stimulating, physical and creative activity is desperately needed to combat this public health problem.
Art With a Heart hopes to combat these health issues by providing children with an enjoyable week of arts and sports participation!
