Big Red Summer Camps Offer Options for Youth on the UNL Campus
It's time to begin encouraging youth to have fun this summer exploring a career field alongside faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln!
Several academic departments across campus are teaming up with University of Nebraska 4-H to host a series of career exploration camps in 2004 open to all junior and senior high youth.
"These three-to-five day camps are designed to provide students with an introduction to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) as well as exposure to a future career field," explains Dr. Kathleen Lodl, 4-H youth development specialist.
Camp participants will have the opportunity to explore UNL and campus life, develop friendships with peers who have similar interests, interact with faculty members, and have fun!
The 2008 camps are scheduled during June. Youth can choose from topics such as computers, golf, movie-making, horse, culinology, theatre, fashion design, media mania, child development, government and more! Each camp will have a culminating event to allow campers to demonstrate their new knowledge and skills to parents and others.
2003 was the first year for the camps, and feedback shows they are making a difference: Sixty-four percent of participants said they felt better prepared for the future. Eighty-four percent said they worked with experts in their fields.
One participant said, "The movie-making camp was a great experience for me. Actually being on campus for a week and working with instructors helped me decide UNL is the college for me!"
