Now in our eight year, DezignKidz has been nurturing budding creative talent in the Bay Area since 2009. Since DezignKidz began, we estimate we have instructed and inspired over 1,200 creative Bay Area kids, many who return to us year after year. Partners and co-founders Durga Kalavagunta and Kathy Bonte began their endeavor out of a love and respect for all aspects of design and a desire to empower young minds to bring their ideas from design to fruition. Beginning with their first summer camp in fashion design, they have since applied the same high standards to creating innovative age-appropriate programs in accessory design, interior design and textile design.
Kids ages 7-14 learn to take an idea from concept to completion and explore their creativity while gaining valuable practical and problem-solving skills. DezignKidz programs encourage true “design thinking" while fostering a sense of global awareness and an eco-friendly mindset.
In addition to being an incubator for young design talent, DezignKidz' core values encourage repurposing, recycling, the use of earth-friendly materials and an appreciation of ideas and textiles from other cultures.
Our staff is carefully selected for their patience, enthusiasm and skill set in fashion, sewing and textile arts. DezignKidz provide a high staff to student ratio and a very hands-on approach to instruction, because we know that our youngest designers can "dream" bigger than they can "do". Gradually, as students move up through the DezignKIdz curriculum, we encourage more autonomy and independence while still providing the one-on-one instruction needed to advance their skills.
The goal of every DezignKidz offering, from summer camps to after school programs, merit badge programs and birthday parties, is to provide a fun and stimulating environment that encourages self-expression, confidence and creative visualization while laying a foundation of practical skills and knowledge that will last a lifetime.
