Students at HS Archaeology Boot-Camp absorb as much as they can about everything from classical inscriptions and ancient city-planning, to temple architecture, the history of the domus, and Roman frescoes. They also read ancient poets and historians (and some modern ones, too!) who shed light on these two archaeological sites. Mini-themes in each unit highlight the particular architectural and artistic marvels of each city. At HSABC we teach students to think like archaeologists and to develop an archaeologist's imagination and intuitions.
July 18th – July 21st: non-stop lectures, tutorials and independent student research in the Humanities Spring library at our home-base in Assisi. In-depth visits to nearby Roman houses and small Umbrian Roman cities.
July 21st - July 23rd: spotlight on Paestum
July 24th: Tour by boat of the Amalfi Coast
July 25th - July 28th: spotlight on Pompeii with day-trip to Naples and its Archaeological Museum
Mornings
Students have a typical Campanian breakfast (all the usuals plus local yogurt made with buffalo milk) and then morning classes in Your Paestum (or Your Pompeii): Writing about what we see; Sleuths of the Past, techniques of archaeology and the archaeological imagination, Survival Italian, to help get oriented at sites and site-museums, and cafes, and our core Spotlight courses.
Mini-themes for Spotlight courses include:
Unit I (Paestum): The archaic smile: expression in ancient Greek sculpture and The Greek temple: From Archaic to Classic
Unit II (Pompeii): Mini-History of the Roman fresco and Inventing private space: the Roman domus.
Afternoons
Lunch is sandwiches, fruit, salads, and cool drinks -- everyone helps. Then it's siesta time until 4:00: students relax, read, study, and swim. At 4:00, we have a brief translate all together an Italian text on something we are going to see that day. We visit snd explore sites from 5:00 – 7:30 (when it’s cooler!).
Evenings
Humanities Spring Boot-Camp has dinner (a two-course Italian cena) at home. Twice during the week we go to a nearby trattoria or pizzeria. We often have ice cream at the temples (illuminated at night and very beautiful!) or explore nearby towns. Agropoli, particularly beautiful, is just a short drive away.
Dates and Costs
Humanities Spring Archaeology Boot-Camp (HSABC) 2012 will run from July 18th to July 29th and cost 1,850 USD, which includes everything (room and board, classes, museum and site fees, transportation within Italy) except for our two dinners out. Students who apply by March 15th automatically receive our EER (early enrollment discount) of 250 dollars. We offer some work-study and merit scholarships for HSABC, including the chance to be counselors-in-training at our Humanities Kids program, which starts back in Assisi right after Boot Camp ends.
HSABC is committed to helping interested and enthusiastic applicants to attend. If you are really interested in coming to Archaeology Boot Camp, please go ahead and apply, and we will do our best to make it happen!!
