More About Camp
Imagine a day where you have six hours to spend exploring a wildlife sanctuary with other kids your own age, guided by an adult who really enjoys working with children, and loves the world of nature... Imagine a day where you learn about tadpoles at Frog Pond, check out the rocks for signs of denning mammals along the Enchanted Forest Trail, or go "fielding" for butterflies and dragonflies at the far end of Sprague Trail.

That's what our summer day camp program is like at Broad Meadow Brook. It's days filled with explorations, learning, nature crafts, and fun with new friends. It's gaining new skills (do you know how to make a flour trap or catch a crayfish?), having fun (it seems appropriate to mention "ponding" and "streaming" here!), and using your senses to observe nature (when was the last time you sat on a forest floor and listened for shrews or sniffed a rotting log for aromatic clues?)

No - you can't come to our day camp program, but your 5 - 16 year old son or daughter can! Our day camp program features one and two-week sessions. Two weeks gives your youngster time to form new friendships and for groups to bond together. Two weeks gives the campers enough time to really explore the sanctuary, practice new skills, and learn in-depth about the topics that interest them.

Here's the way it works...during the first week, campers are exposed to a wide variety of natural history topics and wildlife habitats. Wildflowers, butterflies, leaf litter invertebrates, aquatic insects and crustaceans, trees, forest birds, small mammals, wetlands, and the forest floor are just a few examples of these topics and habitats. At the end of the first week, campers will be asked what they enjoyed most about their first week, and what they would like to learn more about... the second week will then be designed around the feedback received by the counselors (with the addition of interest areas not yet explored!)

Our day camp staff have child care experience, and have a strong interest in nature and the environment. They have even temperaments, a sense of humor, a love of children, and enjoy the out-of-doors. They are trained in health and safety, first aid, program development, camp policies and procedures - everything they need to know in order for your children to have a safe and enjoyable summertime learning experience.
