One week backpacking in the heart of the pristine Opal Creek & Bull of the Woods Wilderness Areas. Learn hands-on what it takes to be a confident & safe backcountry traveler in the beautiful and rugged West Cascades.
Opal Creek Expeditions combine backcountry skills with growing an appreciation and understanding of the unique ecology of the West Cascades. Campers spend 3-6 nights on the trail, learning navigation, camp cooking, and wilderness first aid, along with on-the-trail lessons about fire ecology, geology, botany, and much more.
Our Back to Basics trips are perfect for first-time backpackers 10-12 years old, offering a slower pace and more emphasis on the fundamentals of responsible and safe wilderness recreation.
Expeditions for 12-15 year olds each approach the wilderness from a different perspective, from examining freshwater ecosystems in the alpine lakes to investigating fire ecology as we pass through the terrain of the 2011 Mother Lode burn. Two of our expeditions include half-day kayaking trips on the North Santiam River with the certified guides of eNRG Kayaking.
Our Bull of the Woods Extended Expedition offers 16-18 year olds a chance to push their endurance, take on leadership roles, and see more of the backcountry than any previous expedition.
All Opal Creek Expeditions begin at our base of operations in the historic mining town of Jawbone Flats, 3.1 miles down the Opal Creek trailhead. We follow Leave No Trace principles and maintain a staff to student ratio of 5:1. Our instructors are certified Wilderness First Responders and trained extensively to be prepared for any backcountry medical emergencies.
A complete gear list will be sent upon registration. If there are items you do not own consider renting equipment from local retailers.
