Project Acorn is a four-day, sleep-away leadership retreat for youth ages 16-24. Our community is for youth of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer) and/or non-traditional families, youth who are LGBTQ, and their allies.
Project Acorn will take place July 8-11, 2010 at a site located in Ottawa. With space for 50 youth participants, the summer schedule at Project Acorn is designed to provide participants with an extraordinary leadership experience. Our activities include both the traditional and the cutting-edge. Examples of activities include:
Leadership workshops - social justice activities - LGBTQ history – creative writing – two spirit workshops and aboriginal teachings - swimming – outdoor adventure – drumming - arts & crafts - kayaking - drama - field sports - hiking - dance
Project Acorn is run by the not-for-profit organization, Ten Oaks Project, and our program is offered on a sliding scale basis.
At Project Acorn, being queer or having a queer family is not an issue. There is no need for youth to "come out" about their families, their own identities or to struggle with the thought of "coming out". It's a place where youth can just be youth in a supportive, learning-filled setting.
