I started techlab to make the education opportunity I wish I had when I was a kid. I was always interested in technology, and would tinker with any electronics or computers that I could get my hands on. Most of what I learned when growing up was computer usage, like using a word processor or browsing the Internet. I never learned about the deep and fascinating world of computer science until I studied it in college. I learned that solving problems with computer technology is more than a career pathway - it is a source of constant inspiration and an outlet for creativity.
Through my work as a software engineer, I learned that most students are only exposed to toy models of computer science like Scratch, or given fill-in-the-blank programming education that doesn't impart practical or long-lasting knowledge. I believe the best way for students to learn about computer science and technology is the way I learned it - by making things, breaking things, and seeing how things go from idea to reality.
My vision for techlab is a collaborative atmosphere where students learn about technology in a context that interests them. In the past five years, we have made great strides toward achieving that goal, and developed teaching methodologies that are widely popular outside of our education program. We are now in the process of making our entire curriculum and business structure open-source, so anyone can create a technology education program to uplift the next generation of makers.
