General Notes About Camps in the State of Texas

Texas is second most populated as well as 2nd largest state by area, with the following major cities: Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso, and Austin. All of these cities have a large number of day camps in their metropolitan boundaries as well as specialty summer programs. In addition to day camps, many of these large cities have major colleges such as the University of Texas at the state capitol of Austin, Texas A&M, Rice, Baylor, University of Houston - many of which offer a general sport camp, as well as a variety of art camps. Perhaps the existence of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston provides a technological backdrop for the prevalence of both computer camps and robotics camps.

Given the enormous size of Texas, the climate varies significantly and is highly dependent upon of the particular region of the state. The Panhandle and El Paso on the western part of the state will receive significantly less precipitation vs. the southeast and Gulf Coast.

In addition to a number of large urban hubs, the Lone Star State also boasts a vast expanse of undeveloped terrain as well as natural features such as the Rio Grande River (bordering Mexico), the Pecos and Red River, the Gulf Coast, inland plains, as well as hilly landscape including the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas - all of which can be well suited to resident sleepaway summer camps. Clusters of residential summer youth programs can be found in such areas and often nearby more rural cities such as Hunt, TX
