4. Stanford Summer Humanities Institute - The Summer Humanities Institute is a three-week course for rising high school juniors and seniors interested in intensive study in history.
Resident Camp
Coed
Stanford, California

Led by Stanford professors, the Summer Humanities Institute lets rising high school juniors and seniors explore the big questions at the heart of the humanities: how and when can ideas transform society? When is the use of force legitimate? How can we define the limits of individual rights?

Students will spend three weeks on the beautiful Stanford campus, living in residence. They will spend the first two weeks intensively studying and researching one of two topics – “The Age of Jefferson” and “Revolutions” – attending daily lectures by the faculty members, and participating in group discussions and activities in the afternoon. There will also be downtime for extra-curricular fun, as well as supervised off-campus excursions to places of cultural and natural interest around the Bay Area.

During their third week, students will work closely with their professors, graduate students, and writing mentors to produce original research projects.

Applications are due March 15, 2012.

The COLLEGE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM engages 11th and 12th grade students in college-level academic activities that build the critical thinking skills necessary for college. Over the course of 12 days, students will attend courses in college level writing, research skills, logical reasoning, and presentations. Students will also receive seminars and lectures covering study skills necessary for college success, such as time management, course/major selection, note taking, and critical reading.

Our goal is to prepare students for college success by giving them experience with academic projects similar to those found in college classes, while living in a fun, supportive, and supervised environment. This program can be taken as a follow-up to our College Admission Prep Camp, or taken as an independent offering.

The HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM challenges 9th and 10th grade students in high-level academic activities that develop skills needed for high school success . Over the course of 9 days, students will attend courses in advanced argumentative writing, critical reading, and logic/problem solving. Students will also receive seminars and lectures covering study skills and strategies such as time management, note-taking, and course planning.

This program is designed to give students who are already doing well in school an experience that is both challenging and fun. Our unique classes allow students the one-on-one attention that is often missing in school, allowing them to explore their potential as writers, thinkers, and doers. This program can be taken as a follow-up to our Prep Camp Excel, or may be taken independently by advanced students.

* A 3.0 GPA is required for each program.

6. Digital Media Adventures - The Summer Computer Camp for Kids - THE SUMMER COMPUTER CAMP FOR KIDS (AGE 9-13)
Resident Camp
Day Camp
Family Camp
Coed
Stanford, California

The Digital Media Academy offers separate courses for kids, age 9-13 (at all its campus locations), called Digital Media Adventures. Like DMA's teen courses, the hallmark of Adventures is its superior instructors. Other summer computer camps, by necessity, hire young people barely out of high school as instructors. At Digital Media Adventures, we have a more sophisticated approach. Our master instructors have a level of expertise you simply will not find at other computer camps. They are real-world industry professionals, working in the fields of 3D animation, video production and game design who also have a passion for teaching kids. Our instructors are older, have more experience, are more professional, and are paid more than those at other computer camps...and it shows. With a typical instructor-to-staff ratio of 5 to 1, kids get lots of attention. Choose from the following weekly sessions:
Adventures in Robotics
Adventures in Filmmaking & Effects
Adventures in Game Design
Adventures in 3D Game Design Extreme
Adventures in Web Design & Flash

Kids typically stay 2 or more weeks, combining topics for a more rounded experience or taking the same course a second or third time to explore more advanced techniques. Kids staying on campus are housed separately from teens, grouped by gender and age, and supervised by our dedicated Adventures live-in adult counselors.

A Well Rounded Experience for Your Child

At Digital Media Adventures, we strike a balance between in-class learning and out-of-doors fun. We recognize that kids need to move! We take breaks for recreation in the morning and afternoon that may include soccer, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, basketball, scavenger hunts and other crazy outdoor games. Evenings and weekends are packed with more organized outdoor activities with weekend trips to amusement parks, Lazer Tag facilities, video arcades and more. And of course, our adult supervisors ensure a fun and safe time for everyone!
