CAMP JORDAN IS A GREAT ADVENTURE featuring traditional camp activities while making friends with other children. Established in 1966, Camp Jordan continues to provide a fun and exciting camp experience for children learning to manage their diabetes, with the supervision of trained counselors, nurses and doctors.
Camp Jordan is hosted by the Makemie Woods Camp and Conference Center, located off I-64 between Richmond and Williamsburg VA. Dates for 2002 are July 21 - Aug 2, and rising 4th - 9th graders who are compliant with their diabetes regimen are eligible. Campers can enroll for two-weeks, or a first-time camper can enroll for July 21-27.
When e-mailing the camp, please specify that you want information specifically about Camp Jordan.
In addition to the swimming, canoeing, crafts, campfires, cookouts, games, etc., that are standards in the Makemie Woods programs, education about nutrition and other concerns specific to diabetes is provided. Bible study and worship are offered as options, but are not required.
Physicians and nurses will provide medical supervision. Many of the medical, nursing, and nutritional personnel are volunteers from the supporting hospitals and private practices. Counselors, certified lifeguards for water activities, and program directors directly supervise the campers in all activities. The program staff is provided by Makemie Woods and is recruited nationally and internationally. They are carefully screened and trained to provide a safe and successful experience.
