Whether it's science, language, computers, or environmental/nature studies; academic summer camps provide an environment conducive to learning across various subject matter or disciplines. Some academic camps provide a fixed location and concentrate on a single field of study, while other summer programs cover a more diverse range of study topics and may travel or embark upon relevant field trips.

John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), British philosopher, economist, moral and political theorist, and administrator, was the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century. His views are of continuing significance, and are generally recognized to be among the deepest and certainly the most effective defenses of empiricism and of a liberal political view of society and culture. The overall aim of his philosophy is to develop a positive view of the universe and the place of humans in it, one which contributes to the progress of human knowledge, individual freedom and human well-being. His views are not entirely original, having their roots in the British empiricism of John Locke, George Berkeley and David Hume, and in the utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham. But he gave them a new depth, and his formulations were sufficiently articulate to gain for them a continuing influence among a broad public.

Summer Action is primarily an education program that also includes service projects. Registrants will participate in activities that teach them more about world hunger, Heifer International’s mission and perhaps most importantly about themselves. They will learn about their role as global citizens and about how their choices affect the lives of others. They will learn they are a part of a global community and they have the power to make decisions to improve the lives of others.

Throughout the week registrants will participate in Challenge Course activities and have the option to sign-up for service projects or additional education programs. Service projects include helping with general Ranch chores, gardening, working with livestock, composting, and other Ranch projects. The service groups perform help maintain the Ranch so that it remains an active Heifer International community where people can learn more about working to end world hunger and poverty while caring for the earth. Additional education programs involve hands-on activities that teach more about Heifer International’s mission and how the participants can make a difference. Sign-up activities are meant to allow registrants some flexibility in designing their program as they pick the activities that interest them.

Summer Action: August 5-10, 2007: This program runs 7 p.m. Sunday – 11:00 a.m. Friday. The program is open to youth 12 years (or have completed the 6th grade) and older with an accompanying adult chaperone. Each adult can bring up to five youth. Summer Action tuition is $340 per person to include all educational programming (Global Gateway, low and uplifting Challenge activities, service projects and additional educational activities), lodging and meals. Participants will sign-up each day for various service projects and educational programs. Participants will spend one night in the Village and four nights in a modern climate-controlled lodge. Each room in the lodge has two single beds and a private bath. Each room will be assigned two people. Individuals are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Ranch.
