When you climb the gangway to the deck, you step away from the familiar routines of school, friends, and family, and begin your own personal voyage of discovery. Your home is a magnificent 19th century-style sailing ship, cruising the New England Coast.
You become a sailor, standing watch, tending sheets, and steering your ship with pride as she scuds along before a fresh breeze. You watch whales, seals, and dolphins in their natural habitats, and observe the ocean world through hands-on investigations led by dynamic instructors eager to share their passion for ocean stewardship.
You’ll visit historic ports along the coast and her islands, including historical sites and museums, and be submerged in maritime culture through the stories, legends, superstitions, and myths of sailing ships and the sea. The rewards are found in moonlight nights with a gentle breeze…in knowing the names of the stars… and in feeling at home in the vastness of the ocean world.
You experience this voyage with strangers who will quickly become friends – friendships born through shared adventure. You become a respected member of a close-knit community, and what you learn about yourself is the true bounty of your voyage. Welcome aboard!

Maritime Camps; Five days, Four nights, for Ages 13 to 17
Maritime campers become part of the AJ MEERWALD’S crew, sailing and living aboard an historic tall ship. Campers learn to raise and furl sails, coil lines, navigate and steer the ship. With deckwashes, sea chanteys, knots and standing watch, campers will truly become a tall ship sailor! The program also incorporates our award winning education program connecting and teaching campers about the environment and how we all affect it. Campers help to preform trawls, catching various sea animals in our trawl net, monitoring water quality, analyzing plankton of the local water environment, and learning about local watersheds.
The first 2012 camp is from July 2-July 6 and begins in Liberty State Park, NJ and finishes in New London, CT where the 2012 OP Sail will be for the weekend. So bring the family for a fun weekend of viewing tall ships from around the world.
The second maritime camp will start in Atlantic City, NJ and finish in Cape May, NJ from July 30-August 3. On the last day, each camp offers a campers and parents sail at 1:30 so that the young sailors can show their parents what they accomplished and learned all week.
Cost $750 includes meals and all accommodations
Sailor For A Day: for Ages 10 to 16, 9:00am to 4:00pm
Campers aboard our Sailor For A Day program learn how to become a member of the crew. The morning begins with an introduction to the ship. Campers then help raise sail so we can get on our way! They also participate in our award winning educational program, learning all about our environment and how we affect it. They help to monitor water quality, help trawl for fish and other sea animals, learn about our local watershed, and so much more! In the afternoon, campers learn the skills of the maritime trade including navigation, important knots, how to stand bow watch, and even learn how to steer the boat!
